Ok so yes the New Year has come and gone. And even in the few short months that we’ve had, I’ve had a plethora of health issues and trouble with kiln firings. So not such a great start to my New Year. But don’t fret, I always find a way to capture a bit of happiness. Since I’ve been bedridden for a portion, I decided I could, at the very least, draw. You see, my head is ALWAYS full of ideas, which flitter away if I don’t capture them in some form of a tangible sketch or document the inspiration with notes.
Well, I’ve been itching to create some yarn bowls that were a bit more theme-oriented than the one to the right. Don’t get me wrong, I love the peony and the quilted texture. I simply wanted more pizzaz. And since I’m a self-diagnosed sweets addict, I thought of CAKES!
Here are a couple sketches I did that played with the actual cake shape, as well as just textures and designs I’ve seen on cakes.
Since I loved the peony from my previous bowl, and sugar flowers are a massive hit, I thought I’d start with that one. The sketch above was my take on the fantastic Peony Ruffle Wedding Cake with Gold Sequins by Juniper Cakery. I have this super fun fondant mold by Marvelous Molds that would make creating a bunch of sequins way quicker than hand sculpting. Using that mold for the sequins helps me keep the cost of the final bowl down, so win-win. I still have to glaze this beauty, but all I can say is wow…cake to pottery turned out pretty beautiful don’t ya think? I’m making these as yarn bowls but they could easily hold fruits and veggies as well as they are pretty large.
